What a joyous day!!! Again, I'd love to hear more of his spiritual experience here along with the technical educational experience! Great embelishments for this page! What an accomplishment, and what a blessing to be married to a humble man. He will be a great instrument in the hands of God.
Larry got his Divinity degree from Duke University, following a non-traditional path. Most Lutheran pastors get all their training at Lutheran Seminaries. The synod required 1 year at a Lutheran seminary, so Larry did his third year at Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary, in Columbia South Carolina. Most of his classmates at Duke had graduated the year before as their degree only required 3 years, and his required 4. So his fellow graduates at Duke were one year behind him in their degree program, and he did not know any of them. Therefore, he graduated with strangers.
Larry considered himself a marginal student, but he studied hard and was a very determined and committed student. This is where he used his organizational skills from his business career, and his personal maturity, to great advantage. Younger students had trouble managing their time and stressed greatly over tests and papers. But Larry was calm, collected and prepared, because he did a lot of work in advance. He graduated from Duke with a 3.2 GPA - this man who was afraid that Duke admissions would look at his application and laugh!
He still has a humble heart.
Look at him. He looks so young and happy. Would you believe he was 52 years old?
