A Real Romantic
***
In his late thirties, Larry worked for Pioneer Plastics as a Product Manager. He traveled all over the United States and Canada. He liked to cross stitch in his hotel room rather than drink and carouse as other businessmen do. But he was too shy to publicly acknowledge that he stitched. He referred to himself as a “closet stitcher”. During one long flight to the West Coast, when there were few passengers, he sequestered himself near the rear of the plane, He pulled out his cross stitch, planning to hide it if anyone walked up the aisle in his direction. But the stewardess approached from the rear service area and caught him. In short order, all the stewardesses gathered around to admire Larry’s work. The other travelers might have wondered what ‘line’ Larry had used to get their attention. Women just like Larry because he appreciates the things that women do. He even does some of those things himself, and does them well.

Larry entered a cross stitch into the Maine Needle Arts Competition. There were 300 pieces in that category. He was shy about stitching, so he entered as “L Holmes”, expecting that they would think that L stood for Linda or Lisa. He won second place. When he went to pick up his award, he learned that the first place winner was also a man. So men who are in touch with their feminine side are winners. If all men would follow his example, men and women would get along so much better, but alas, he’s one of a kind.

During this period, Larry and Ilene took vacations at Bed & Breakfast Inns along the coast of Maine. In Camden, they walked or rode bicycles, usually carrying a camera and a picnic lunch. One day, an elderly lady invited them in for a private tour of her garden when she saw them hovering at the gate taking pictures. On another day, they rode past a farm with Belted Galloway cows and ate lunch overlooking Rockport Harbor.

Larry spent quiet hours in a rocking chair, on the breezy porch, cross stitching. He created a pattern for the little Dream B&B in Camden and another for Sonnenburg Estate in Canandagua, New York. Larry is a very domestic fellow. Even though he is a very good traveler, for him, there is no place like home.
