I was christened, Lawrence Frederick Holmes, at St Mary's Church, Danville, NY

Born on a stormy night
***
A thunder and lightening storm rocked Danville, NY on the night Larry was born. His father, Fred, made his living by driving a milk truck and had to use that vehicle to drive Martha to the hospital. The cab of the milk truck was very high, so that to get in it, you had to climb over the gas tank. The seats were so high above the ground that Martha, in labor, was in no condition to climb up there, so Fred had to lift her into the seat. I imagine it was no picnic for her to ride in that truck to the hospital, especially with the storm going on.

the hopsital record calls him "Boy Holmes". In that day, couples did not know the gender of their babies until after the birth, so it was customary for parents to choose both a boy's name and a girl's name. It appears that Fred and Martha picked Larry's name after his birth.

The Christening Certificate and the hospitals care instructions for Boy Holmes are copied onto this page. The booties are a folded card birth announcement for Larry. His mother preserved these documents until Larry was in his fifties, and then gave them to me to scrapbook. I also received other documents from her about his childhood, and was surprised at the good condition of those records.
