Coxsackie Athens High School
***
When I was in the seventh grade, I hurried through lunch every school day to join my friends in the gymnasium for dancing. We were allowed to bring our 45 records and dance. That was the best part of the day. The girls danced and the boys watched. We did line dances to perfection.
We learned the cha-cha, the waltz, the rhumba, the tango and the swing.

Why is it that the only people who really like to dance are girls? If you want to dance,
grab the girl next to you and forget about the guys.

Ilene, The Disco Queen
***
In 1978, Ilene took a class in disco dancing. For the last class, the instructor took the students to a night club. Experienced dancers were informed about the students coming to the club, and some were there, lookinh for dance partners. Ilene got a good workout. In the end, an alliance was formed with a great dancer named George who was 6 foot 5 and a former football player. He was smart and funny and graceful and he loved to dance. Ilene and George danced together at least once a week for about 3 years. Ilene was tall and thin, and had some great dance costumes. One of her favorites was a white halter dress with a tulip hem. People liked to sit and watch them dance. If somebody was foolish enough to intrude on their dance space, George made it very uncomfortable, and they would retire to the seats to watch the real dancers.
