Golliwog picture from Internet
Journalling Reads:
My very first memory from my childhood is not about an event or person; it is about a piece of clothing. My very first memory from my childhood is about a pair of overalls, or dungarees as they were called in England in those days. Why do I remember these particular overalls? I think maybe it is because the bib part of them was the head of a golliwog. A big, bright face, with the biggest smile and the biggest eyes, and that amazing black hair - who wouldn't have been happy wearing them? I remember they were made of a heavy cotton material, and my sister and I had a pair each. Hers had been dark red and mine had been dark green, but both pairs were so faded that they had obviously been worn many, many times. They were either a favourite piece of clothing, or so functional that mum put them on us often.
I think I would have been about 3 years old, maybe 4, when we had those overalls. I remember my sister still being very little, and she is two years younger than me. There are no photos of us wearing the golliwog dungarees, no reminders that they ever existed in fact. I did ask my mum whether she could remember them, but she said she couldn't, and my sister was too young to remember them, but in my mind I can see them as clearly as if I'd seen them yesterday. I have a picture in my mind of getting them out of the airing cupboard in the bathroom when we lived in Owen Square. I remember the clean fresh smell of them. I feel a great affection whenever I think about those dungarees - and to this day I still love golliwogs.
