Bertha was a Belgian draft horse that we rescued from a neglectful home. Here's what the journaling says:

Big Bertha came to us in March of 1998. Neglect had allowed her teeth to grow so long that she could no longer graze. In a field of lush green grass, she was slowly starving to death.

The first time I saw her, all I could think was, “Well, the frame is all here. Maybe someday they’ll build a horse on the spot.” She was all bones and big sunken eyes.

I walked up to her slowly and reached out my hand. Bertha stepped up close and laid her massive head in my arms. Nothing needed to be said … Bertha had found a new home.
