This is my first journaling, no-photo LO. I wanted to capture my insecurity of the artist within... very revealing for myself.

The journaling reads:
I’m not sure how to describe it – I suppose it’s that human nature quality of wanting to belong, but I don’t have a recognizable style, at least something that I would consider a style. Not style in the sense of a personal style; I think in my forty-plus years this would be something that I have mastered, but style in the sense of a scrapbook style.

I consider my pages to be well executed but not necessarily in any consistent manner and/or technique that are easily recognizable. I’m inspired by my photos or perhaps the occasion in which produced the photos – so my pages vary from the simple to the ornate. I suppose I could attribute my lack of commitment in my scrapbooking style to my Aquarian zodiac sign – that’s always possible, I suppose – but I don’t think it’s that cosmic. Let’s take stock of what I know.

There’s the side of me that is drawn to the graphic nature of a simple layout, similar to the artistic styles of Amanda Probst and Angie Stevens. The well-designed layout includes that eye-catching photo with simple text, crisp colors and a perfectly placed accent. Some may consider this specific style simplistic, but there’s something that draws me closer, something that requires a second look.

Then there’s the style that is recognizable by Vicki Boutin and Wilna Furstenberg, a style that includes many details that keeps the viewer mesmerized, with each glance revealing something fresh and new. Aside from those wonderful photos, there’s that personal style of patterned paper choice, the exacting location of embellishments and cleverly crafted journaling that makes one want to read every word.

Lastly, there’s that scrapbooking style that is fresh and cutting edge – pushing all boundaries, thinking outside the box. I suppose I’m drawn to this particular style, as it is a true work of art, following only the heart of the artist within. When I think of this style I think of Ali Edwards and Elsie Flannigan, theirs is a style all their own – recognizable by that creative technique, that masterful way they layer each component to make the artistic layout a whole.

Now, as I stare at these sentences outlining artistic techniques – I must admit - I’ve enjoyed playing with them all. However, in trying to define my scrapbook style, it appears somewhat schizophrenic, confirming my lack of commitment to a personal style. However, once I consult my trusty dictionary I find the answers to comfort my search.

Style is defined by Merriam-Webster as “a particular manner or technique by which something is done, created, or performed”. “A particular manner?” My manner, my own particular manner! By this definition, it would appear that I do have style, a scrapbook style. My creations are from my heart, a true expression of me. Just by this simple statement, I believe I do have a scrapbook style. Some may define it differently – but it’s what I know. It’s my own viewpoint, my self-expression –my own style.

TFL, Debra.
