Journaling: “Will you be my Mommy forever”, you asked as you lay snuggled under your covers, just before bed last night. “Of course I will”, I answered, “but will you be my little boy forever?” You said yes, but I know the real answer. Already you have grown so much. You change a bit more each day. What used to be just a tiny bothersome thought has grown bigger, at about the same pace you have. One day my little boy will be all grown up, and he will leave me. I try to fully enjoy each phase, the good and the bad, because this time in your life is so fleeting. For now I am the most important person in your world. You tell me secrets that you don’t tell your friends, you think I am beautiful, you tell me that you never want to get married because you always want to live with me. Something tells me these loving thoughts won’t continue into the teen years. Being a parent is the most difficult work in the world, because if I do my job correctly it means that my child needs me less and less each day. I love watching you learn new things and become your own person, yet my heart is filled with sadness that each accomplishment pushes you a little further away. I can only hope to strike the right balance between parent and friend, mentor and confidante. I love you so much my sweet boy!
