Journaling: When Moki died unexpectedly in September of last year, we were all very sad and missed him a lot. More than us, though, Bella seemed lost without his companionship. We knew that soon it would be time to welcome another dog into our home. With me in school, however, it wasn’t a good time to start our search. We weren’t sure if we wanted a puppy or an adult dog, but were determined to choose a dog from a shelter or rescue group who needed a good home. As my Winter Break drew nearer I started monitoring the websites of our local dog rescue groups and animal shelters. It was tough going at first since we can only have certain breeds (allergies) but I knew we had a little time to look. One day I spotted an adorable toy poodle on the website for our local animal shelter, but when I called they told me he already had a hold on him. Bummer. But I kept checking the site each day and noticed that he hadn’t been adopted a few days later. I called and was told he hadn’t been picked up yet so if we got there first he would be ours.. I picked up the kids from school and we rushed down there to meet him. He was even tinier than I expected, and very frightened, but I knew he would be perfect for us. We adopted him just in the nick of time, there were several calls inquiring about him just in the time it took to fill out the paperwork. Now, a month and a half later, he is settling in. He’s very attached to me and hesitant about the other family members but I Think he’ll mellow in time. He gets along wonderfully with Bella and she has been very sweet, patient and nurturing with him from the beginning. His little personality has continued to bloom and we all delight in his silly sweetness. He loves to press his belly to the floor and wiggle around wagging his tail furiously while I chant “are you a silly dog? Yes you are!”. He’s a little tiny fellow, barely two pounds,, but we love him with all our hearts and are very happy he has found a home with us..
