This year is a record year for snow fall here in Washington State. It seems like it'll never stop snowing. With so much snow and warming up, the avalanche danger as posted on NW avalanche center web site was EXTREME and everybody was urged to stay away from the mountains since frequent natural avalanches were expected. After a long time thinking and few phone calls to ranger stations, I found a route that was safe even in these unusually extreme conditions. It's actually a highway through the mountains that gets closedas soon as the snow reaches it, and becames a great place for winter recreation. It is surrounded by mountains but in a safe distance. It was an easy outing, 10 miles Rt but mostkly flat terrain but it was trully an exciting one - we could hear about 25 -30 avalanches, some very impressive rumbling down the surrounding slopes. We did not see one actually sliding but just hearing them was so cool.
