Our last desert trip. Journaling taped to the other side reads:

BIG BURN CANYON
I-90 East – Ellensburg
Date: 5/31/2008
RT: 18 miles

Adventurers: Charles, Aaron, Swatee, Kirsten, Jim, Catherine, Gumbo, Steven, Jay, Rebekah

Our trip threw us few surprises. First of all we arrived to the trailhead and our surroundings weren't nearly as deserty as we thought they will be. Then we started the hike and never found turn for Big Burn Canyon (we saw sign for Big Barn Canyon though) so we continued to follow the dirt road until after 7.5 miles we finally got to a
intersection where one fork would go somewhat uphill. We hiked half mile up to see if a view will open there but the trail just continued further on so we found a great relaxed spot nearby where we all decided to enjoy a break.

The biggest surprise the trail had for us was the incredible amount of wildflowers blooming everywhere we looked. Large variety of flowers and colors lined our trail and the further (and higher) we went, the more breathtaking the flower carpet got.

No matter that we never found where Big Burn canyon really is; we agreed that this is definitely an area worth visiting when the flowers are in bloom and we'll be coming back for more exploration next year.

NOTES: I’ve heart that snake encounters are relatively high this year so I was on watch out but we never came across one. Perhaps our large noisy group scared them away way before we could spot them.

On our way back – and very close to the trailhead - Aaron realized he lost his camera. I offered to backtrack to the point where he last remembered taking a pic with him and help him look. It was about 2 miles of backtracking and we did not find it. Kirsten and Jim picked us up in their Jeep and drove us to the trailhead. Once we got back to the trailhead Charles told us Rebekah found the camera little lower on the trail. That was a relief. They initially did not want to tell us until we all sit for the dinner at the restaurant and they planned to have the server bring it together with the drinks. That would have been perfect.
