What month is it? I believe my calendar still says August but the mountains sure didn’t behave accordingly on our cascade Pass/Sahale Arm hike. Clouds welcomed us at the trailhead, rolling across the sky, occasionally revealing tiny bit of the beauty behind the white curtain. First rain shower hit us about half way to the pass. It was more of a drizzle than actual rain, kind of like the clouds could not decide how serious they want to get today, but after few minutes it got annoying enough to make us bundle up in our raingear.

Views from the Cascade Pass, half way point of our trip, were surprisingly good… and we even got a chance to enjoy short sun break. It lasted for only about 30 seconds but it felt darn good and gave us hope for the miles still ahead of us. We soon found out it was false hope as the cloud cover thickened with elevation we gained while making our way steeply uphill towards Sahale Arm. The wind picked up equally fast. The temperature dropped rapidly.

We bravely faced the elements and continued our journey until we reached our destination. Freezing, digging for any extra layers we had, we noticed white dots falling towards the ground. Hails, that was our initial thought but as soon as first of them landed on our jackets, we realized it was snowflakes. Beautiful, fluffy and very real snowflakes.

Despite the reminder of what hiking in late October is usually like, the trip was wonderful. Together with half way decent views we had a chance to enjoy variety of wildflower carpeting the meadows around the trail and all the wildlife we encountered along the trail was sure a very nice bonus.
