This sweater may not be very pretty, but to me it is very special! It was my grandmother's; handmade with love. She wore it everyday; if she was cleaning she was wearing it; if she was just watching a television she was wearing it. When she left us unexpectedly it was a heartbreaking moment. But the day we went to the house after her funeral, I saw the sweater waiting in its usual place on the coat rack. Waiting for her to come home and wear it like she did everyday. Waiting to be needed and loved again.
I placed the sweater over my shoulders and it felt like my Grandma was there with me, comforting me through the roughest time I've ever faced. It still held her scent and all I could do was put my nose to it and smell my grandma. Giving me that reassurance that she would always be there if I need her even if she wasn’t on the earth with me now for me to touch and see. But she would always be with me in my heart and soul.
Having her sweater was both a comfort that made the shock of her passing easier on me, and a bittersweet reminder of her joyful life that had been cut far too short. Yet, because I have this sweater, I will never forget my grandmother's touch, and it will continue to comfort me and remind me of her every time I wear it to clean my house or just to watch television.
I miss you everyday Grandma but I am so blessed to have been loved by you and to have a small part of you to remind me of all the wonderful times we shared. This is my treasured sweater of love.
