As many as 1 in 10 women have PCOS now, or will develop it in their reproductive life time.
Symptoms include:
• Irregular or Absent Menses • Numerous cysts on the ovaries in many, but not all, cases • High blood pressure • Acne • Elevated insulin levels, Insulin Resistance, or Diabetes • Infertility or fertility problems • Excess hair on the face and body • Thinning of the scalp hair (alopecia) • Weight Problems or obesity that is centered around your mid section
I suffered for 10 years (possibly longer) gaining 100 lbs, high blood pressure, and worst of all - Diabetes. If only I'd been diagnosed when I asked for help... Instead I was ignored by doctors, my concerns pushed aside as "the usual female problems". I even had some doctors tell me that I must be lying to myself about how much I was eating and how often I was exercising or otherwise I would be losing weight and not gaining it. I biked to my university classes all year long, even in winter, and in the summer as well. I worked full time and continued with my classes. I followed the food pyramid pretty religiously, STILL I gained weight. I continued to lose hair - it was blamed on the stress from working full time and going to school full time. I had dark patches of skin showing up (I've always had them in my underarms since puberty). I was losing hair by the handfuls, and I was SO ASHAMED that it was growing in other areas, on my belly, on my breasts. I even started to grow lighter blonde hairs on my face, I was growing a beard! Even more embarrassment and shame. It wasn't until I was diagnosed with diabetes at the young age of 27, it was also then that the PCOS was finally discovered.
