It is very hard to see but the vase is puffed out a little, almost like a quilt would be. I used batting over a piece of cardboard that was cut into the shape of a vase.I then covered it with paper. The strip on the side was punched out 5 times and backed with the same paper as the vase. Time consuming but fun.
