why a freeze brand... if you don't mind my asking, what is the difference?

do you breed horses? Branding doesn't seem to happen in England. i think they tattoo info in the ear of the horses and the cattle wear ear tags.

Neat photo! We have a few cows that we have bought that have their previous ranches' brand freeze branded. Also one or two that have hip #'s too. As I said, we don't brand our horses. Two of the three colts I bought last fall are branded though. How do you get away with just one letter for a brand? We can't do that up here, would be pretty easy to change by adding another letter, number or character.

looks neat. My parents and all the other ranchers in their area still use the hot iron brands. I like the look of the freeze brand better though.

This is the "J" brand on the left flank of our horses. Every horse that we intend to keep gets a J with the last 2 digits of his birth year (Hooter has a 00 under the J, I just didn't back up far enough). This was a freeze brand, which turns the hair white in the brand. Hooter was sweaty, so the photos isn't that great.
