There's got to be something in the volcanic ash that prevents vegetation - maybe the soil PH is all wrong. Usually volcanic soil is quite fertile and the grass grows in abundance. It would be interesting to know what the deal is here. Where is it, exactly? I really love the barn wood paper. Where'd you score that?
This is an amazing looking park. A volcano erupted here back in the 1200''s and there is still hardly any ground cover other than black cinders. Don't know how old these trees are but I found them striking.
