Journaling Reads:
Rusty is a dog we adopted in 2001. A friend of ours found him abandoned by a reservoir near pueblo. He wasn't able to keep him in his apartment, so we took him. We had no luck locating his owner. Our vet estimated him to be about 11 years old. Rusty had lost most of his vision. We had to talk loudly or in a very high pitched voice in order for him to hear us. He had a skin disorder that caused his pores to clog and his fur to fall out. We had to feed him Science Diet Sensitive Skin food with a few drops of salmon oil. He got a bath every other day with a washcloth and baby shampoo. We brushed his hair with a baby hairbrush. His ears were cleaned daily and he was on a few medications. His skin disorder caused a horrible odor that you could smell across the room. We couldn't shave his hair because of his skin. After a few months, we finally got most of his health problems under control.

We already had two dogs when we adopted Rusty. Kelsey was 1/ 12 and Scuttles was 6 months. Rusty spent most his time sleeping. I felt so bad for him because Scuttles was the typical puppy, always pouncing on Rusty and trying to get him to play. Kelsey seemed to know Rusty wasn't very healthy, so he was gentle with him. Kelsey was always giving Rusty a bath. After Rusty lost some weight, he became more active and would run around with Scuttles and Kelsey a little bit each day.

Rusty made the most unique noise. The only way I can think of to describe it isa as a rolling growl or a rolling groan. It was almost as though he was holding his voice in his throat.

Rusty had to put a lot of effort into standing up. He would pull himself up very slowly and then shuffle himself along. Kelsey always stayed behind and made sure Rusty got where they were going without to much trouble.

Rusty was so loving. Whenever I was sitting on the couch, he would rub his body up against my legs. He would keep doing this even while I was petting him. He would follow me around everywhere that I went.

On Sunday, September 7, 2003, all the dogs had breakfast, Then they went outside to go potty and play. After awhile, Rusty wanted to come in. He came up and rubbed against me and did the same thing to Dave. He was giving and getting a lot of love from both of us. Then he wanted to go back out with Kelsey and Scuttles. A little bit later, Kelsey started crying. Dave ran out to see what was wrong. He came back in and told me Rusty had died. I started crying right away. I went outside to see him. I had to, I couldn't believe it. Kelsey was trying to get Rusty up. We brought Kelsey and Scuttles in, and Dave buried Rusty. We had a little service for Rusty.

For almost a month after Rusty passed away, Kelsey and Scuttles both seemed sad and confused. They would both run back looking for him. They also were depressed. It amazed me how intuitive animals really are. We miss Rusty. All of us do.

Rusty,
We miss you. We love you. We think of you all the time. We miss your distinctive voice. We miss your love. Thank you for coming into our lives. Thank you for being you. Thank you for being part of our family.
We Love You,
Dad, Mom and your little brothers
