Via delle Selvastrelle #8
Tirrenia, Italia
c. 1956-1965

I believe the year was 1956. My father had taken a Civil Service job at Camp Darby. My mother had 3 little girls and was pregnant with my brother, and wasn't going to stay behind. So off we went to Italy.
When we arrived (from what I learned as an adult) housing was not ready, so for a time we camped out on the beach in an army tent. I can't imagine my mother with all these little kids living like that. Soon we moved into a house that was only 2 blocks from the ocean (the Mediterranean Sea). We lived there the rest of the time we were in Italy.
We went to an American school, but had Italian class every day, so most of us children could speak Italian. Even now, more than 45 years after leaving Italy, I still remember it.
Sometime in 1965, just as I was going into Jr. High School, we moved to France. By now, we were a family of 7 children. Yes, one sister and all 3 of my brothers were born in italy. The memories of being in Italy are wonderful.
