JOURNALING:

I know that my story is not unique. At some point, everyone must deal with the pain and grief of losing a loved one. However, there is joy in knowing that our most treasured memories of our loved ones remain forever locked in our heart.

My loving grandfather (Granddaddy) lost his battle with prostate cancer in 1991, the summer before my sophomore year in high school. Because I was young, I did not have the chance to truly get to know him on an adult level and I really wish that I had thanked him for all that he was, when I had the opportunity.

Dear Granddaddy,

I WISH I had appreciated you more, rather than acting like a spoiled teenager who did not want to spend time with you.

I WISH that my husband had gotten to meet you because I know you would love him and he would really enjoy tinkering in the garage with you on your endless “projects”.

I WISH that everyone in our nation shared your great love of God, Country, and Family.

I WISH the world were not broken and diseases did not inflict good people, but I know you are now pain free and walking on streets of gold and I would never take that away from you.

Thank you, Granddaddy, for living out your beliefs every day and for positively impacting the lives of so many people in our community. Thank you for your love and for being a Christian role model. I look forward to the day when I will see you again!
