This story is a bit longer than usual.
Jian
Allow me to introduce you to Jian. It is 1954, the Korean War has ended, and her new husband, PFC Anthony Delgato, has brought her home to New Jersey, USA. They met at one of the clubs in the camp town near his base. She was one of the ten thousand young registered prostitutes servicing the American servicemen. But this man was different. He never treated her like the others. He was gentle and kind. He tried to communicate with her. Yes, the soldier saw the beauty of her soul matched only by her physical beauty. She was ravishing. He understood the government was forcing her to be a ‘comfort woman’ to the American military. This was not her choice nor was it something she could refuse. It saddened Anthony that this beautiful woman had no choice in what was happening to her.
Anthony could not get her out of his mind. Whenever at the camp town he would spend time with Jian, sometimes paying double to be able to stay with her longer. He found himself obsessing about her. And when he could not find her, he would feel panic setting in. What if he never saw her again? The thought of that happening created a pain in his chest, a feeling he never experienced before. A longing kind of pain… he realized he was in love with Jian.
And so, this love story began. Amid a war, where almost 40,000 of his fellow servicemen lost their lives, Anthony fell in love with Jian. Deep in his heart, he felt guilty to be this happy, knowing the families and friends of so many were grieving.
Everything seemed to happen so quickly once he professed his love to Jian. They married, the war was over, and he was returning to the States with his war bride. Jian was leaving her family and all she loved and all she knew.
It was so exceedingly difficult to adjust to a different culture for Jian. She never felt truly welcomed by Anthony’s Italian-American family, nor his friends. She felt looked down upon and talked about. But Anthony, Anthony made up for all the negatives around her, or so he thought. He loved her so. He has always loved her so. But truth be told, Jian never genuinely loved Anthony. She tried to love him with the same passion…but failed.
Back in Korea, when he told her stories of life in the United States, she became excited and wanted to be there! She could not bear to live any longer under the horrible conditions that was her life in Korea. She was tired of being a kijich’on woman. She was tired physically and emotionally of being used by men to fulfill their sexual desires! She cried daily. There was no way out. And along came Anthony who was offering her so much!!!!! Now, after three years, Jian could no longer pretend. She was miserable. She knew no other Koreans. She had not made any real friends. She felt so lonely and worse, alone. She could no longer feign passion when Anthony would make love to her. Part of her simply no longer wanted to be.
She thought of her umma, her mom. She felt so guilty to be living so well knowing full well the conditions her mother and sisters lived under. She thought of the abuse her sisters must be going through. She sat at the beach, collecting her thoughts, and watched the waves crashing on the shore. The deafening sound of the waves somehow was soothing as was the magnificent sight of the setting sun. It was at this moment that Jian realized that she had to find the courage to do what needed to be done. She had to do the honorable thing, but could she?
