Journaling: In kindergarten and 1st grade, after Kyle began to lose interest in children's books and before he could read fluently, most evenings we would cuddle up with a book reading a chapter or two a night. One of the books we read was The Hobbit. This was before the movies, even the early animated one. He wanted to be Bilbo Baggins for Halloween, I had to put on the thinking cap for that one. We were able to cobble together a costume that I think turned out well. At first he was a little frustrated by not being recognized, but the ones that did know who/what he was figured it out right away.

White Fang, The Maltese Falcon and The Stories of Mark Twain are other stories I remember reading. By the next winter, he was reading well enough on his own he could read on his own.

We always started by reading books of her choosing with Matty. She was not old enough to keep interested in the chapter books and usually “honked” out before we were done.

Photos are from Halloween 1991.
