Journaling reads:
"I used to hate cats. One scratched me from the shoulder to the elbow when I was little and I hadn’t liked cats since. Until I got Skippy and Gilli. When I moved into my apartment, I left Quincy in the care of my mother. He was a big, energetic boy and we didn’t think he would like being confined in a one-bedroom apartment. When I was talking to Mom about feeling lonely and wanting to bring him to live with me, she brought those points up again. She suggested I get a cat instead. Since I worked a lot and cats are lower maintenance pets that would do well in an apartment, she thought a companion of the feline variety would be good for me.
I had decided I wanted one male cat. After all, Quincy was a male and he was a great pet, so, I figured a male cat would be just as good. On a trip to Jack’s Aquarium one day, I saw these two cats in a cage in the back. They had been there for several months and still nobody had adopted them. My heart went out to them and I decided two cats would be OK...but I still wanted both to be boys. The female clerk there told me she believed them both to be boys, so I got them. Two brothers from the same litter.
Since I am a big fan of movies, television, and the entertainment industry in general, I wanted their names to reflect my interests. One cat seemed to be more dominant than the other, so I focused on this. One dominant leader, one docile follower. “Skipper” and “Gilligan” seemed to fit the bill perfectly. Only...when I went to get them both neutered, I found out that Gilligan was really a girl. I didn’t want to confuse her too badly since she was used to her name by this point, so I just shortened it to Gilli (pronounced like gill*ee). That sounded close to Gillian. Sort of. The only place I made my mistake was that I named the one that turned out to be more dominant “Gilligan” and the tamer one “Skipper”. In the end, though, that worked out. I mean, if I had named them correctly and then found that the dominant one was female (I should have known all along!) how could I have shortened “Skipper” to sound more feminine? Skippette? Skipperina?"
Note: I liked the smiley cat brad so much (it is like a happy ending) that I went back and added it in the same positioning to my The Story of Bella layout as well.
