"Balto and The Iditarod" is one of my FAVORITE units to teach. Second graders love animal stories, and this account of "the serum run" of 1925 in Alaska peaks their interest in reading, grammar, composition and math. Every year for the past 12 years, I have taught this unit in March. I start approximately a week before the beginning of the Iditarod dog sled race in Alaska. This race commemorates the serum run, and ties in extremely well with the story of Balto. Several years ago I discovered that a resident of my city was entered in The Iditarod, so I persued making contact with Randy Chappel. What an interesting experience that was for my students and me! We got email updates from him while he was on the Iditarod Trail and the entire class was behind him for the duration of the race. When he came back to Texas, he came to my school and brought his lead dog, Jazz, with him. The kids LOVED IT!!! Randy put all the dog gear on Jazz and even allowed the children to try on Randy's hooded, fur-lined jacket that he wore in the race. For the grand finale, the boys and girls got to pet Jazz!!!! What a treat that was. Every year since then, Randy has answered questions (via email) the children have about dog sledding. About the LO: The BG Urban Prairie was just PERFECT in it's color combination of blue, black and yellow. My classroom is done in these colors and has a BEE THEME, as we are a class of busy bees! I matted the photos, cut and inked the pp, painted the chipboard letters. TFL
