Hey, I know it looks gross. But it’s a story that must be told. When we arrived at Huntington Beach, we immediately noticed that the water looked red. We didn’t worry too much because there were lots of other people already in the water. What we didn’t know (until later) was that the red was plankton on the water. What we also didn’t know was that jellyfish REALLY like this particular type of plankton. Marcie was the first victim. It may not have been her brightest moment, but in her defense, she was trying to show it to Courtney. She saw the jellyfish on the water, and without thinking, she tried to pick it up. She didn’t hold on long, though. The next unfortunate victim was Chrissy...who got it to the ankle. It’s my own fault that I got stung, too. You see, after watching two of our group fall prey, I should have been smart enough to get out of the water. I thought it was sea weed, tangled around my ankle. I kicked once, and then twice before the pain registered. Only then did I think that it might be a good idea to leave the water. All three of us had red welts. We flagged down the beach patrol when they drove past to see what we could do to ease the pain. They had spray bottles of vinegar that took off the sting. And by the time we got back to the hotel we were all feeling much better. Lesson learned. Jellyfish like plankton. Jellyfish will sting. Jellyfish stings seriously sting. September 2005
