journaling reads: Ever since our first trip to Disneyland, you had wanted a Jessie doll to match your Woody. Once the second trip was planned, Mom and Dad decided that this time, you would work for your doll. You decided that you would collect cans to recycle and collect pennies. It felt good to be using this time as a teaching opportunity. For five months you were diligent in your collecting. You helped crush the cans, you kept track of your money jar. When the day came to cash in your cans, it was you who pulled 1 tote and 2 cardboard boxes into the recycling plant. It was you who signed your name to the receipt and collected your $7.20 (it was never really about the money anyway, right?). Combined with your pennies, you had earned $15.48, by yourself. We were so proud of you, but not nearly so proud as we would be.

As we headed to the bank to trade the change in your money jar for dollars, you noticed the people from the Salvation Army collecting donations in front of the building. You looked up at me and asked, “Mommy, can I give some of my money to the people who don’t have food?” I couldn’t even answer, I was so choked up, so I nodded. You stuck your little fist into that jar and grabbed a handful of change. Then you ran over and without hesitation, dropped it into the bucket, while I blinked back tears. It was also your choice to pay your tithing, and you took a bulging envelope with $1.55 in nickels up to the Bishop by yourself. Hannah, you never cease to amaze us. We thought that we were providing you with a teaching opportunity, and I do believe that you learned a bit about work. But it was truly your dad and I who learned the real lesson. You taught us about giving. You taught us about unselfishness. You taught us about love. And everytime I see that Jessie doll, I am reminded to allow myself to learn from you. Thank you.***

I know the journaling is long, but it was one of my most proud moments as a mother thus far...I had to share my feelings. THanks for bearing with it! There are two receipts behind the pic, in addition to the journaling. ONe is the one she signed from the recycling plant, and the other is the receipt from donation to our church...I kept it hidden for the purpose of posting here...it had personal info on it...
