I want to keep a running progress sheet on this skull so that I can refer to it later when someone asks me if I'll do one for them.

The short answer will be NO.

Day 1 ~ Sanded off the old paint on the face plate of the bone.

* The prep work was a pain. The paint job that my ranch hand did was done in oil based enamel, and I ended up having to use a razor blade in places to get it off. Then a rough sand, then a smooth sand so that the bone won't tear my paint brushes to bits in the first pass. They'll be trash by the time I'm done because bone is rough and it just destroys the bristles. But hopefully, they'll last long enough to get this thing finished.

Once the sanding was done, I put down the black base coat. Then waited for dry time. Then the red stripe and dry. Green and dry. Yellows and dry. And now I'm tired and it's time to quit. I know myself well enough to know that if I push on when I'm tired, I'll be disappointed in the final result.

It's a lovely skull. The horns measure 55 inches from tip to tip. I'm standing on a stool to get them into the frame for the photograph. I'm very happy to have it, and I'm even happier that John wasn't offended that I wanted to repaint it myself. He was quite candid about his inability as an artist, and very frank when he told me that he just wanted me to be happy with it.

When he first told me that he had one and was going to give it to me I told him, "No! That's an extremely valuable thing and you don't want to give it away! You keep it and hang it in YOUR house..." He was absolutely insistent about giving it to me, explaining that I do so much for him, and it's not often he can return the favor, and this is something that he can do for ME and would I just shut up and let him do it?

So, yeah. I'm really happy to have it, but I'm more happy to have the kind of friend who would GIVE it to me.
