My younger daughter's dog is a rescue from a pack that was running loose in my neighborhood last year. They had killed my neighbor's pigs, and were terrorizing our chickens. The leader of the pack was a pit bull cross and his number two was a nasty mix of boxer and chow. But there was this little black pup running with them, a sweet little female that would occasionally show up by herself while I was doing chores and follow me around being helpful. She was thin and always hungry and she knew I was a soft touch for a meal of leftovers and scraps. By herself, she was well mannered and seemed to understand that she'd gotten herself into a bad situation that she just didn't know how to get out of. I hated the thought of her inevitable end if she continued to run with the nuisance pack that our neighbors were systematically removing. So when Amy told me that she was thinking about getting a dog, I told her, "I know where you can get a good one."

Amy named her Eevee, after the Pokemon character who has the potential to become anything. She took her to the vet, who confirmed that not only was she NOT pregnant, she hadn't even had a first heat. Amy had her spayed and vaccinated that day and began her formal training into the world of "good dogs."

Eevee is probably some sort of Border Collie German Shepherd mix. She certainly displays strong characteristics of both breeds. She's probably the smartest dog I've ever met, and Amy encourages her brain development by using both verbal and hand signal commands. The first time they came back to visit - Amy had had her a couple of weeks - she handed Eevee her purse and said, "Carry my bag to the car." Eevee did. I was astounded, although I don't know why. The dog is smart and wants a job, and the daughter is military disciplined and bossy. They are made for each other.

Eevee's favorite game is fetch. Her Border Collie energy and German Shepherd laser focus are a perfect combination to make her an excellent Frisbee dog which she will play, literally, for hours if you have the stamina, which most people just don't. Amy takes her to one of the many dog friendly parks around Colorado Springs - this one is Garden of the Gods - and will play with her until they're both worn out.

It's a typical weekend activity for both of them, which fills both of them with the joy of being together.
