We were moving Amy from OKC to Colorado Springs, May 26, 2019. The weather had been punky all day. Weird thunderstorms pretty much tracked across us from central Kansas across the border into Colorado where we started seeing seriously defined mammatus clouds. But my NOAA weather app didn't seem too terribly concerned about them, nothing showed up on the radar images, so we kept an eye on the sky and the nose of our moving truck pointed toward Colorado Springs.
A little after six, we ran into this, and yes, it's exactly what it looks like it is. The first thought I had when I saw it wasn't “tornado.” It was, “that's weird.” And then I did a split second double check of my mental files, and said, “oh - yeah - that's what that is!”
For the record … it's not a zoom shot. The hood of our truck is right at the base of the photograph, and you can see Amy's legs reflected in the upper left corner of the windshield. It's every bit as close as it looks like it is - which is about three miles away.
It didn't occur to us to be worried about it. We were perfectly safe since it was moving in a northeasterly direction and we were traveling southwest. so basically we were traveling along a parallel path, giving us a lovely view of one of nature's most violent events. When we got to my cousin's house in Colorado Springs, she told us that there had been a big tornado in the Hugo area. We said, “um, yeah, we know. Want to see it?”
The Lincoln County Colorado sheriff's office and the Denver Post both reported it on the ground for about 10 minutes, traveling through open farmland with no reports of widespread damage or injuries. If that's the case it had pretty much just gotten itself put together when we intercepted it because we must have watched it for six or seven minutes before we went around a curve and lost it to view.
There were nine others reported in eastern Colorado on May 26, 2019, so it was a pretty busy weather day, but I think I may be the only person who actually took a picture of this one. I can't find any other photographs or video of it online.
All in all, I'd have to say this was pretty epic in my “have you ever” resume.
For the Celebrating Laura Whitaker challenge - Sketch #1. I'm just about through all this Amelia Rose Prima paper. I'm not enjoying it too much - I have discovered that I do not like foiled papers. This one is pretty much all scrap papers from my previous two projects. I still have two page kits left to do, hopefully by the end of this weekend and then I can move on to something I like better!
