My mom has a toy schnauzer that is quite elderly and starting to have multiple health issues. He's thinking about going to Jesus, but he's just not committed to the idea yet. But we all know that it's coming and that my mom is going to be devastated. So she's planning ahead for the day when she will be alone again.

I have kind of a reputation for placing the right dog with the right person, so early last May Mom asked me if I would start looking for her next dog. She was VERY specific. It had to be a schnauzer, miniature sized. (Don't ask me why. I don't understand terriers. I'm a herding dog girl myself.)

Anyway, I said, "ok. But those don't show up very often, and when they do, they're snatched up pretty quickly." She said that she knew this and that's why she wanted me to start looking - because it was going to take a while.

The next day, I opened my laptop, put in a quick schnauzer pet finder, and up popped, not one, but FOUR siblings at a rescue about an hour from my house. I called mom. Told her that I couldn't believe it, but .... well, there they were.

We went to look. Three were pretty hoppy jumpy and totally excited to meet my mother, which is not what an 83 year old woman needs, dogs jumping all over her. The fourth one sat at the edge of the room, just watching. I pointed to him and said, "there's your dog, right there." She said, "how do you know?" I said, "I just know. Watch."

I walked over a little closer to him and sat down on the ground, patted the ground between us and said, "Come here." And he did. Like a little gentleman.

Mom started in with "It's too soon. I don't need two dogs. I can't manage two dogs. I didn't think we'd find one so fast..."

I told her, "I will take him home with me and when you're ready for him, let me know. Because if you don't take him, you will NEVER find this dog again. This dog is seriously perfect for you."

And he is. Except - he's a little bigger than she wants. That's his only fault. He's house broke. He doesn't bark to excess. He's polite. He's crate trained. He likes people but he's not obnoxious about it. He doesn't lick you. And he likes my mom. But every time I ask Mom if she's ready for him, she says, "he's just too big."

He IS a little large for a mini, weighing in at about 25 pounds. He's stocky, like a little wrestler. But he can launch himself from halfway across the room into my lap when he's invited to come sit with me.

Mom tells everyone that Pat has the best dog anyone ever had - so I guess she's decided to keep looking, which is too bad for HER, because she's going to want me to find THIS dog again, and I just don't think there is another one like him out there.

Picture on the left was taken May 7, 2020, the day I picked him up at the rescue. The other two were taken two days later after his first visit to the groomer, which exhausted him so badly he slept for the entire rest of the day.

His groomer says he's the best behaved dog she's ever seen. His vet says the same thing. I don't know what's wrong with my mom, but her loss is my gain.

Meet Oskar.
