Journaling tells the story:

Snakes and Clowns..yep..two very scary things! Clowns...the scariest to me. I just don't like them.

I sealed my own fate when I told you that I would be whatever you wanted me to be for Halloween that year. You were 5 1/2 and I was sure that the next thing out of your mouth would be..."Mommy, I want you to be a fairy princess" or "I want you to be a good witch or a ghost."

But, noooooooo....You looked me right in the eye and said, "Mommy, you must be a funny clown." Huh???!!!!!! "But, Ryan, I could be a fancy pretty, dressed-up lady...wouldn't that be better?" I implored.

But, you didn't budge...."Mommy, I need you to be a funny clown." "Why do you NEED me to be a funny clown?" He gave me this very long, pained sigh....."Ooooooohhhhh, Mama....because...."

Five-year old speak for "get over yourself, Mom!"
