The handwritten note on the back of the original photo says that this was taken in July of 1947, when I was 8 months old.
By now, I’m sure that you know about Swirly Hues, the new monthly color challenge (details are available on the Swirly Blog http://swirlydoos.blogspot.com/2011/09/introducing-swirlyhues.html). The rules are pretty simple: use only the Swirly Hues provided in the palate, with a 5% smidgeon of black or white if desired; include a detail that you’ve made following one of the many tutorials from the Swirlydoos Forum; follow the sketch that is provided as part of the challenge.
I’m afraid that this should be subtitled “Taking Liberties”, because this is what I did with both the sketch and with the tutorial. As soon as the challenge was announced, I knew that I wanted to use this photo; the colors and the design are perfect. However, once I started to assemble my “ingredients”, I realized that I needed to size my picture at 5” x 7”. The one way to make it work was to flip the border strips around. Once I did that, I decided to use a piece of cotton lace as one of the pieces. I made the two smaller flowers with the help of LisaG’s Heartfelt Creations Posy Patch 3D Flowers tutorial. I made them with BoBunny paper, rather than the cardstock called for in Lisa’s recipe. I found out why cardstock is a much better idea: the paper will not work for the bud centers in the tute. I ended up making rolled centers with a few of the scraps. The frame is a Dusty Attic chippie that I primed with Picket Fence distress stain and then dabbed with one of the new Ingveld chalk inks.
