The Day of Your Birth
September 21, 2004
I was so excited and filled with anticipation. You were due ten days ago, but I told Dr. Plimpton that I did not want to be induced like I had been with both of your older brothers. So we waited. Finally, we scheduled an appointment at the hospital for me to be induced on September 20, 2004. Well, there were so many other women having babies that day, that they did not have a bed for me during the day. I was told to wait. So, I took a bath and tried to relax. Around 8:30 that night (9-20-04), I started having contractions every 10-12 minutes. We called Nana at 10:15 pm to ask her to come over to stay with your brothers while your dad took me to St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Phoenix. It was so busy that I had to wait for a bed in the triage area. Finally, I was given a bed and the contractions started coming faster and harder. My water broke at 1:15am (on 09-21-04) and then I was really in pain. The contractions were coming one on top of another and I could hardly catch my breath. The triage nurse (Kris) did everything she could to get me into a labor/delivery room so I could get an epidural. This finally happened around 2:00am. I was dilated to 4 centimeters. Unfortunately, once I had the epidural (and felt much better, by the way), I did not continue to dilate. Your heart rate started to drop and labor was not progressing well. On top of that, the doctors determined that there was meconium in the amniotic fluid. So, we decided that a cesarean section was the safest way for you to be delivered, because you weren’t handling the contractions very well.
In the operating room, everything went smoothly. Dr. Plimpton was taking bets as to how much you weighed. I had no idea how big you were. Your dad guessed 8lbs.2oz. Dr. Plimpton guessed 8lbs.9oz. The anesthesiologist guessed it right – 9lbs.8oz. You were a big boy! You were 21 inches long and you were born at 11:18a.m. You were so beautiful! Your hair was white and your eyes were blue. All the nurses and doctors commented on how adorable you were. I fell in love with you the moment I saw you.
You were such a good baby. You nursed right away and were a pro in no time. You slept well too. Your brothers were so excited to come to the hospital to see you on your birthday. Nana spent the night to help me take care of you. Grandma Ellen and Grandpa Ron flew in from Wisconsin that day to see you and to spend the first week of your life with you. All of our friends were so eager to meet you. The Alkolas, the Lachances, and the Mahons all came to our house shortly after you came home so they could hold you and start getting to know you.
I’m writing this on February 12, 2005 – you’ve been keeping me busy, so I’m stealing a little time now to capture those first days of your life. You are almost five months old now. You rolled from your back to your tummy for the first time today. You are eating rice cereal two times per day, and we think you are teething (you drool a lot right now).
You are such a blessing to this family. This is only the first of many memorable events in your life. God bless you Nicholas. I love you! Mom
