My grandparents took this photo in 1932 when they came to the Black Hills for their honeymoon. By 1932, they had started Jefferson's face to the left (as we look at it) of Washington's. However, they ran into a problem in the rock, and by 1934 they had removed Jefferson from the left and started carving his likeness to the right of Washington. I think these old photos are fabulous. Not many people even realize that such a major change in design is part of the history of this National Monument.
