Letter To My Son:
My Sweet, Sweet, Addam, October 2005
Where do I start? I have so much to say to you! I love you, I admire you, I respect you. It cannot be easy being a young man with this insidious disease. You have handled it with such courage and grace. Could I have done the same? I think not. This is why you are such an inspiration to me. You have not let your illness beat you nor define you. Yes, it occasionally gets you down, but you always get back up. After each hospitalization, you emerge stronger. For every valley you go through, you climb the next mountain . . . you are a true fighter!
You are sitting on the futon listening to your music as I write this letter. Because you are such a typical college kid in so many ways . . . you like music, shooting pool, gaming, hanging with your friends . . . it is still hard to believe that you live with this illness daily. Your matter-of-fact approach to schizophrenia sets the tone for the rest of us.
Honey, you are so amazing. I look at you and am blown away by your sweet spirit and your artistic nature. My son, the film director, screenwriter, and future Oscar winner!!!! You are not going to let anything stand in your way of obtaining your goals! Yes, my Irish spirit is alive and well in my sweet son!
Dad, Jess & Joey, and I all love you so very much. Our commitment to you is that we are always here with you as you battle your illness. Your family will always support you in every aspect of your illness – you are never alone! We love you and we thank God for you! You are a blessing and an inspiration to us!! Thank you for being you!!
Yes, my sweet, sweet, son Addam . . . I love you dearly and I am thankful that God chose me to be your mother.
