Wow. I read what you wrote and am amazed!! This is so unusual and so beautiful. Sooo much work!! I have altered items before, but, I am betting your took a lot longer!
Love the story of this book. I like it when everything has a meaning. Sometimes I just don't "get" a collage when you can't figure out how all the things go together, ha ha. This is a wonderful piece of artwork. Did you use the Fruit Punch, ha ha?
I've wanted to do collage type stuff for a long time but never really knew where to start. I'm a librarian, and while I was at work I came across a book on altering books (kind of meta, if you think about it), so I thought I'd give it a try, and this is the result.
I bought a nice big old gardening encyclopedia for $2 from our used book sale. At first I was going to try to hollow out the book, but then I thought about pages=leaves, the flowers described in the book, and decided to turn the book into a garden.
I sliced out about 50 pages from the inside so the book would lay flatter. I used a piercing tool to poke a bunch of holes down through 30 pages on each side to put the floral wire through. I used Mod Podge to glue the pages together and then painted the edges brown (dirt), and the open part green. I painted roughly so that if you look closely you can still see the words underneath. I used a million different punches and dies for the leaves, vines, and flowers, and then distressed and inked them all. I punched the butterflies of of the sliced-out book pages since they're flying up out of the book garden. Again, if you look closely at the butterflies you can read little snippets about gardening. Some are inked all over, some are edged with Copics, and some are Stickled. If I can come up with a catchy title I might paint it along the book edges, but for now it's just my book garden.
