I was in Picher, OK taking photos of the now defunct town. It was a lead and zinc mining town that sprang up in 1914 when ore was discovered. It was the richest ground in the Tri-State (MO, OK, KS). The mining left a lot of tailings that still contained lead, zinc, cadmium, etc. It leached out into the environment and contaminated it. The area became a superfund site but before all the inhabitants could move out a tornado tore thru the town and tore up most of it. The town is now a ghost town. Despite the clean-up there is still plenty of mine tailings and debris left today. Tar Creek that was horribly polluted to the point nothing would grow now runs clear instead of orange. The flowers in this group are what remains of people's homes. The wind was blowing hard so I held one group of blossoms in my hand. Normally I don't like to do that. Sometimes I resort to using clothes pins to hold them still but this one didn't lend itself to that trick.
