My Dad served as a Wireless Operator both on board ship and up north on the Distant Early Warning line in Cambridge. Later in life, he became involved in computers in the very beginnings, when they took up an entire room! I think he would be amazed at the technologic advances they have made today! The journalling is a scan of a note we found in his handwriting, tucked in an old photo album and it reads "If you cannot be first there can be no consolation in being second - yet there is no disgrace either, but let not first place recede to the extent that second place is acceptable" An exacting motto, one my father held fast to, and one of the reasons I pride myself on a strong work ethic to this day.
