This summer was unusual. Because of the high water, we
weren’t able to enjoy the river until July, but we made up
for quantity in the quality of fun. The kids loved playing
there -- with each other and their friends.

July 8, 2005 The three musketeers & I played in the river this
afternoon for the first time. It was very hot today, so it was
nice and refreshing. The swelling and high water this spring
have rearranged the landmarks, so that of the three big
rocks we've been used to playing on, only one remains in
its location.

July 15, 2005 Tuesday afternoon, a new friend brought her
kids over for an afternoon of swimming in our wading pool
and the river. She just moved into our neighborhood and
her 3 kids are very close in age to my younger 4. It was fun
to talk with her, and we found we had much in common,
including not allowing our little girls to play with Barbies.

Yesterday, we went swimming in the backyard again. I
brought the babies down to the river, too, though they
mostly just clung to me rather than wading.

July 17 We've been outside swimming a lot this week. The
heat has been oppressive, up to 105 degrees, but the bright
side of that is that the farmers are finally using irrigation water,
and the river is now safe enough for wading. It has gotten
progressively lower all week, and we've spent a lot of fun
times out there, building a dam, floating, collecting rocks, and
splashing. I love the photo I took of Lillian here helping the
twins. She is so nurturing.

August 8 We did a lot of swimming last week, both in the river
and at the local pool. Allison loves to play with the hose. She
grabs it and sprays herself, then looks surprised when the
spray goes in her face. She & Sarah have also decided they
love to splash and play with the rocks in the river. When
we're outside, they go over to the gate and look down
expectantly. I can only imagine how hard it's going to be to
keep them dry NEXT summer!

August 10 The kids made me laugh today. We went wading
in the river, and I brought the babes out with their bottles
(called "boss" around here, courtesy of our last little kid
who used one). They love playing on a large rock a little ways
from shore. Today, after finishing their bottles, they got their
thrills by dropping their bottles into the river and shrieking
until Lillian or Joey chased after them and "saved" them. It
was a hilarious game. Lillian would hand back the bottle to a
baby, who would wait a few moments, then drop it back in
again! Lillian & Joey even had a few squabbles over whose
turn it was to save the bottles. They finally worked out a
compromise -- Lillian would save the purple one, Joey the
green one.
