Sundown tonight begins Rosh Hashanah - the Jewish New Year. It is a time to begin introspection, looking back at the mistakes of the past year and planning the changes to make in the new year.

Some of you may remember my photo of the shofar a few months back (which Jonathan received for his Bar Mitzvah). The shofar is a ram's horn which is blown somewhat like a trumpet. One of the most important observances of this holiday is hearing the sounding of the shofar in the synagogue. Religious services for the holiday focus on the concept of G-d's sovereignty.

This photo is part of my preparation for tonight. At sundown we will light candles to welcome the holiday and consecrate our observance of it to God. Another popular observance during this holiday is eating apples dipped in honey, a symbol of our wish for a sweet new year.

The common greeting at this time is L'shanah tovah ("for a good year"). So... L'shanah tovah my friends. I will be visiting with family after services tomorrow and until mid-day Saturday, so I may not be around, although I do hope to check in if time permits.
