Journaling:

November 30, 2003, was one of the most nerve-wracking, exciting, scary, and happy days of my life. I was in the labor room with Jen and John most of the night, and was so proud of Jen as she concentrated on her breathing during many hours of labor. When it was time for her to push, John and I helped and coached her until we were all exhausted. Finally, the doctor decided that a c-section delivery was necessary, so Jen was whisked off to the operating room. John went with her, and I joined Rod, Cherie, Gam and Kay in the waiting room, where we all prayed and chatted nervously. When a nurse finally came to the door and asked us if we would like to see the “Kirk baby,” we rushed into the hall to see newborn Jack, wrapped snugly inside an incubator.

The nurse allowed Gam, who is visually impaired, to put her hand through the opening and touch Jack, while the rest of us had to be content with gazing, oohing and aahing. After Jack was taken to the nursery, with John tagging along, the rest of us went to the hospital snack bar to relax for a little while and make some phone calls to relatives and friends. Then we went back up to the maternity ward and had a short visit with Jen, who had been moved into her room. Before we left for home, Jack was brought in, and I was thrilled to hold him for the first time. The wave of emotion and love that came over me when he was placed into my arms . . . there are no words to describe.
