JOURNALING: Jennifer started begging for a dog when she was in Kindergarten. After several months of half-hearted looking, we went to Zerns Farmers Market in Boyertown, PA, and saw a bedraggled little dog in a cage at the livestock auction. Long and low, she was a mixed breed of at least several varieties.
Jennifer and I waited in another auction while Rod stayed to bid on the dog. He opened the bidding at 50 cents, another man bid 75 cents, Rod countered with $1.00, and we owned a dog! After waiting for what seemed like hours for the auction to end so that we could pay for our new pet, we headed to the car, and Jenni announced that her new dog’s name was “Rosie.” When we arrived at home, Jennifer was sound asleep on the back seat with Rosie snuggled in her arms. Rosie slept on Jennifer’s bed that night, and every night after that. Rosie adjusted well to our family, but she didn’t care for most visitors. She also ran off into the park at every opportunity, and it sometimes took us a long time to get her back. But we loved and enjoyed her for 2 years, until one day in early December 1985 she escaped from the house and was killed on the highway. We were all so sad to lose her!! Even now, writing this more than 20 years later, I am teary-eyed as I remember our adorable little Rosie.
