This American white pelican was preening himself when G and I stopped by today. The horn on his beak grows for mating season then falls off when mating is finished. This guy has no lady, he is one of 8 male white pelicans at the Phoenix Zoo that were transplanted to the desert after the BP oil spill. He was injured in a a smaller Florida oil spill but was moved from the Gulf to make room for birds injured in the BP spill.
