This really had me intrigued! I ran across something today that made me stop and think (a crochet pattern for a Krampus hat)....we have something like this here. Ours is called Krampus and he acts as the ying to Santa's yang. There is even a festival in a nearby college town. I didn't really know what it was about but now it makes sense. Same as what you have, ours is just named different. :)

On Saturday we went to a "Perchtenlauf" in our neighbor town. These are very popular here in winter, starting with November. Groups of "Perchten" going through the streets at night with their costumes (many of them are still homemade and most masks are made fom wood) with lots of fire and noise of cow bells and smoke and loud music.
