A layout made for the September SATW challenge. (it received an honorable mention!)

This is an old photograph from 1930 of my Mom and her little sister, which I have cut and placed in a "garden." Mom and her sister were the youngest in a family of 10. They were very poor, their parents were Polish immigrants, so there were no toys or luxuries. But they created their own little world that sustained them. Children of the meadows and fields and forests that surrounded their hometown, their childhood was spent outdoors amongst the streams and flowers, where they spent untold hours playing and dreaming.

I found a poem that was written by my Mom when she was in her late 70's. It is so clearly filled with yearning for the lost days of her childhood. So I carefully altered this fragile bit of paper to fit into my design by tearing, inking and distressing the edges, then tracing over her own handwriting (which was written in pencil). What you see is truly a piece of her!

After I applied molding paste, and various inks, I layered on pieces of a vintage bureau scarf and old laces, along with the chipboard pieces, which were inked and applied with crackle paste. Then I built up the "garden" with lots of fussy cut elements. I tried to include favorite flowers of my Mom's, especially those she may have encountered on her walks. There are also dried pods and flowers, and a stalk of a pressed weed, which seemed fitting!
