This is one of my all-time favorite layouts. I just love everything about it - not only the way it's laid out, but the photos and the story about it. This was a family moment that would have lived in family infamy with or without these pages! :) For one thing, it was amazingly simple to make. It was based on a template, which made cropping and sizing of the mats a lot easier. My title is made completely out of a stickers. I played off the "Got Milk" ad campaign, and using a sticker of a watermelon instead of spelling it out. I used clear stickers of watermelon (which all came from the same set) as embellishments and that was it. I also wrote out the details on the little blocks without a sticker: date, location, what was happening, plus encouraging words that we'd shouted to him as well as who all witnessed the event. And then, of course, I went and drew some watermelon seeds throughout. The journaling was typed out in Word and printed on light green cardstock. Once it was planned out, the layout took about 20 minutes to complete.

Journaling says

It seemed like a good idea at the time. It was July 3, 2005 and we were spending the day at Aviano Air Base with our Italian neighbors - Arianna, 4, her parents Luana and Stenio, and Luana's teenage brother, Andrea. We were wandering around the carnival when Martin saw a sign that said WATERMELON EATING CONTEST! Without hesitation, he signed up, confident in his German stomach of steel. There were men and women of all shapes and sizes. Andrea was responsible for holding up the watermelon slices because no hands were allowed. And at the sound of "GO!" Andrea and Martin were like a well-oiled machine - Andrea holding with Martin inhaling. A huge crowd surrounded the tent and everyone was cheering and encouraging. While everyone involved gave quite an effort, Martin was in the lead. The rinds were piling up. There were just seconds left. But then ... oh no ... Martin paused and with watermelon and juice dripping out his nostrils and all down his shirt, he asked a ref, "Do you have a bucket?" Unfortunately, they did not, so Martin bolted to the fence of the baseball field behind the tent. And while a petite, female high school student went on to win the contest, it was Martin who stole the show as he hurled everything he just ate the last few minutes. The crowd roared with disgust ..."Ohhh....OHHHHHHHH...." and small children covered their eyes. It was really a fascinating moment because, really, how could a wife ever be so disgusted, but so proud?
