This is a Gambel's Quail. Three couples of them live in the bushes by my house and they are hilarious. They act like little chicken scratching in the gravel for food, that big orange block is for them to eat but they mostly take naps on it. If you scare them they usually run like mad and hide in the bushes, it takes a BIG scare to make them fly and then they squeal like little pigs. That a male staring at you, the female lacks the big black tummy spot and brown cap. But they both have the cute plume on their heads.
