Kate I have been thinking about your beautiful-colored rock and have come to the conclusion that it is more likely chrysocolla which is a hydrous copper silicate. Malachite is much greener so I don't think this is malachite. Chrysocolla occurs in the oxidation zones of copper mining areas and is a useful ore of copper. Its hard to tell by a photo but that is my guess.
found this is a wash where a load of rock from the copper mines was dumped to slow erosion in the Monsoon season. It is from a copper mine and it is called Chrysocolla
