this is my mother in the late 50's. she had such an obsession with tanning. tfl
JOURNALING: no heritage album would be complete without including a page about my mother’s obsession with tanning. she worked night work as a nurse so she could be home during the day. i remember quite clearly our summer routine. she would come home and sleep for a couple of hours and then start packing for the lake. beach chairs, towels, suntan lotion, toys, lunch and her trusty raft. all of the moms in the neighborhood would be at the lake when it opened at eleven in the morning, and didn’t leave until five in the afternoon. my mother would get us set up on the beach and then she would hit the water on her raft. she would sleep for a couple of hours out on the water and then come in so we could eat and she could tan some more on the beach with the ladies. she would become known around town as “the woman with the really dark tan.” as a matter of fact, i don’t ever remember her not having a tan, it was as though she was dark all year long. I didn’t pick up this trait from her, actually, i don’t even like to sit on the beach, i get bored too quickly. so even though she’s not with us now, she will forever maintain the title of “beach beauty.”
