Journaling reads: This monument is located just outside Madrid. Built as a tribute to those who died in the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), but also to Fascist Francisco Franco. He is buried there, but no flash was allowed at his tomb. The closest thing I can liken it to in the U.S. is the Vietnam Wall with a Nationalist twist. None of the dead soldiers are identified by name except Franco and his right-hand man. Many in Spain criticize the monument as Franco's egotistical tribute to Franco.
